Goodbye John Peel

As a tribute to John Peel, I'd like to dedicate this post to the late, great DJ.

John Peel was on a working holiday in Peru with his wife when he passed away on Monday 25 October from a heart attack. He was only 65 though you'd never have known it, his passion and taste for music rivaled and surpassed that of any teenager.

John Peel was a real champion of alternative music and although he did a lot for the likes of Rod Stewart and David Bowie, I shall always remember him for promoting Joy Division and New Order. His playlist was extensive and he always played stuff like The Undertones, The Buzzcocks, The Ramones, The Damned, The Smiths, and more recently The White Stripes and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, not to mention his love of a diverse range of hip-hop, metal, dub, reggae and world music.

The John Peel Show was the best place for music on Radio 1 although it was limited to an evening session whilst all the cheap commercial pop crap was churned out during the daytime.

One of the funniest things I recall about him was when he played an early LP by "Aphex Twin" - He got the vinyl out, stuck it on the turntable and, in his usual dry and ironically witty way said something like "This next track is by the Aphex Twin, and it's called, well actually it isn't called anything. But there is a picture on the sleeve next to the track and I can only describe it as what looks like an electron microscope view of a piece of burnt toast". Funny Guy.

I'm genuinely saddened by his demise and can only say that he will be greatly missed. My thoughts go out to his wife and his 4 kids, who all have middle names related to Liverpool FC; Dalglish, Anfield etc... Like I said, Funny Guy.

Totally agree, this man will be missed... not just for what he has done, but for what he would have done if he was still here...

Damn... I have to read the news...

This is the first I have heard of it...

    It is SO SAD.

He was one of the best DJ's around, had exceltnt music taste and will be missed by all that have ever listened to his shows.

    I feel depressed.

Davinian, that is so true, and applies to all our fallen heroes. Hold the faith, pick up the baton and keep the spirit of JP's musical causes going. If I bang my head 'til I'm 65 I'll be well pleased.

SE, sorry to have had to break it to you dude. Quite shocked at how sad I am about it too. We had Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone pop their clogs, then one my big heroes Henri Cartier-Breson died this year. Now JP's gone nobody can replace him.

Trance, that's a good point. Think he started in '68 or thereabouts. And what a wicked diversity in musical tastes - OK sometimes I didn't like some of the stuff, but that's what I admired about him. He got the music 'out there'. He was definately a nice geezer, even though I hear he referred to his missus as "The Pig" LOL

Dig out your records, everyone, celebrate John Peel. And raise a glass to his memory this weekend. We all have a lot to thank him for.

    Nice post mate!

JP was an institution, a unique voice that will sadly be missed. He introduced me to Jazz-fusion in the 70s via his eclectic mix of music, a rare treat in the dull ether that was (and still is) British Radio... Rock On John!

Oooh, Vadergrrrl, always nice to know you're on my 6 :) Or is that Vadergrrrl on my D 1,2,3, said 2 for you and 2 for me ;) And you always taste SO good XXXoOx0x mmmm

Oi Oi Brom-man, the wanderer returns. Yep. JP was the dude. Jazz-fusion, is that like what I'd call acid jazz and trip-hop? Used to have friends who DJ'd that stuff - lots of ColdCut, Ninja Tunes and all that...

Ello Back Boyo! Jazz-fusion as it was definitely called in my day and my 16 year old guitar wielding nephew still uses the term to describe the genre of Jazz meets Rock, lets see... Al Di Meola?, Chic Corea?, Return to Forever, Colloseum II are a few examples. Don't forget I'm a few years infront of you ;-) Doesn't stop me liking the modern stuff tho'.. even if it does promote frequent vertical movement from the eybrow of Brom-woman! Yes I'm back, been watching for a while, decided I did want to play after all. Oh, I deleted my original blog, I guess when I activated it again the Blogmeister couldn't or didn't link in any of my old rambings.. never mind there is a lot of stuff I need to get out sooner rather than later so I should be filling it up again soon.. Yechyd Da!
